Admin/Biographical History |
In 1946 Thor Heyerdahl initiated the Kon-Tiki expedition when in New York. He was soon assisted by Herman Watzinger and Bjørn Rørholt. The latter had a temporary position at the Norwegian Embassy in Washington, and most of the expedition preparation were organized from there. At the end of 1946/beginning of 1947 Knut Magne Haugland, Torstein Raaby and Erik Hesselberg joined the expedition. In the spring of 1947 Gerd Vold Hurum replaced Bjørn Rørholt as the expedition secretary. Bengt Danielsson joined the expedition in Peru in March/April of 1947. The expedition undertook a raft voyage from the 28th of April to 7th of August 1947. The raft, equipment, men and documents were transported from Raroia, in the Tuamotus, by way of Tahiti and America to Norway in late 1947. |
